CV vs resume vs biodata: what's the difference?
Short answer: a resume sells your work, a CV records your whole career, and a biodata describes you as a person. For almost every private-sector job in India, the one you need is a resume, whatever the advert calls it.
The three side by side
| CV | Resume | Biodata | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A full record of your academic and professional life | A short summary of the work you can do, aimed at one job | A sheet of personal details with education and work |
| Usual length | Two pages or more; grows over a career | One page for freshers, two for most others | One to two pages |
| Leads with | Education, research, publications | Results, skills and recent experience | Name, date of birth, family and contact details |
| Personal details | Contact details; little else | Contact details and city only | Date of birth, gender, religion, marital status, father's name, often a photo |
| Changed per application | Rarely; you add to it | Yes, for each job | No |
| Ends with | References or a list of publications | Education or certifications | A declaration, date, place and signature |
| Read by software (ATS) | Sometimes | Usually | Rarely |
The difference between a CV and a resume
The textbook difference is real, but in India it rarely decides anything.
Resume and biodata: why the difference matters
Sending a biodata where a resume was expected is one of the most common mistakes in Indian job applications.
A biodata answers “who are you?”
Date of birth, height, religion, family, a photo, then education in a table and a declaration at the end. Useful for marriage, and for forms that ask for exactly this.
A resume answers “what can you do?”
Skills, results and experience, with personal details cut to a phone number, email and city. This is what a hiring manager is looking for in the few seconds they give each file.
Mixing them hurts both
A resume padded with father's name and marital status pushes your work down the page. A parser cannot use those details either, so the space is simply lost.

Turning a biodata into a resume
Keep your name, phone, email and city. Remove date of birth, father's name, religion, marital status, the photo and the declaration. Then add what the biodata never had: a two-line profile, your skills, and under each job, what you achieved rather than what the post was.
If you would rather someone else did it, send us the biodata. Our resume rewrite service turns it into a proper resume for ₹99, back within 24 working hours.

What is the main difference between a CV and a resume?
Length and purpose. A CV is a complete record that grows over your career and is used mainly for academic, research and medical roles. A resume is a short, selected summary written for one job. In India most private employers use the two words for the same thing and expect a resume, even when the job advert says CV.
What is the difference between a resume and a biodata?
A resume is about your work: what you did and what came of it. A biodata is about you as a person: date of birth, family, religion, marital status, often a photo, with education and jobs listed briefly. Private companies want a resume. A biodata is used for marriage and for some government and local applications that ask for it.
What is the difference between a CV and a biodata?
A CV is a detailed record of education, research and work, used for academic and senior professional roles. A biodata is mainly personal information with a short list of qualifications. They share almost nothing apart from the name at the top.
Which one should a fresher send for a private company job?
A one-page resume. Put education, projects and internships near the top, and leave out date of birth, father's name and the declaration. If the job advert says "send your CV", it still means this.
Is a biodata still used for government jobs?
Some government, PSU and local applications ask for a biodata or give their own format. Use theirs exactly as given. Most recruitment now runs through an online form, where the form itself collects your personal details and no biodata is needed.
What should I send for a job abroad?
In the UK, Europe, the Gulf and much of Asia, "CV" means a two-page resume. In the US and Canada it is called a resume. Neither wants a photo, date of birth or marital status in most cases. A full academic CV is only for university and research posts.
