LinkedIn About Section Examples: A Structure That Works (Before/After)
LinkedIn shows only the first 2-3 lines of your About section before the "see more" cut-off — roughly 300 characters. If those lines are "Results-driven professional with a passion for excellence," nobody clicks. The rest of your carefully written paragraph never gets read. This is the single biggest reason good candidates get skipped: not a weak career, a weak first sentence.
Why most About sections fail
Three patterns show up again and again on Indian LinkedIn profiles:
- They open with an adjective, not a fact: "Dynamic and passionate marketer..."
- They list job duties instead of outcomes: "Responsible for managing social media handles and creating content."
- They end with nothing: no line telling the reader what to do next — connect, message, hire, refer.
A good About section follows a simple order: hook, proof, specifics, CTA. It's four short blocks, not one long paragraph, and each block does one job.
The four-part structure
1. Hook (first 1-2 lines)
State what you do and the scale of it, in plain words. No adjectives about yourself — only facts a stranger can verify. Think of it as the answer to "who are you" that you'd give in an elevator, not a toast.
2. Proof (2-3 lines)
One or two numbers that back up the hook. Revenue, team size, users, cost saved, ranking, funding raised — whatever is real for your role. If you genuinely have no numbers yet (final-year student, career switcher), use a concrete project or outcome instead of a number.
3. Specifics (3-5 lines)
Name the tools, industries, and functions you actually work in — SAP, Google Ads, Figma, SEBI compliance, B2B SaaS, D2C, whatever applies. Recruiters and hiring managers search LinkedIn using these exact keywords, so this block also does SEO work for your profile.
4. CTA (last 1-2 lines)
Tell the reader exactly what you want: open to X roles, looking to connect with Y people, or how to reach you. A profile with no ask gets read and forgotten.
Before and after, across roles
Software Engineer (2 years experience)
Before: "Passionate software engineer with a strong drive to build innovative solutions. Skilled in various technologies and always eager to learn new things."
After: "I build backend systems that handle high traffic without falling over. At [Company], I rebuilt our payment reconciliation service, cutting processing time from 40 minutes to under 3, and reduced AWS costs by 22% (~₹6L/year) by moving batch jobs to spot instances. Comfortable across Python, Django, PostgreSQL, Redis, and AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda). Open to backend and platform engineering roles at Series A-C startups — reach me at [email] or DM here."
Digital Marketing Manager
Before: "Dynamic marketing professional with expertise in social media, content, and campaign management. Passionate about brand building."
After: "I run performance marketing for D2C brands, and I'm accountable for CAC, not just impressions. Grew Instagram engagement 3.2x in 6 months for a skincare brand and brought CAC down from ₹850 to ₹410 by restructuring the Meta ad funnel. I work across Meta Ads Manager, Google Ads, HubSpot, and Mixpanel, mostly in D2C and fashion. Currently exploring senior marketing manager roles in Bangalore or remote — happy to share the full case study if you'd like to see the numbers."
Sales / Business Development
Before: "Result-oriented sales professional with excellent communication and negotiation skills."
After: "I sell B2B SaaS to mid-market manufacturing companies across India. Closed ₹1.4 Cr in new ARR last fiscal year against a ₹1 Cr target, with an average deal cycle of 45 days. I handle the full cycle — cold outreach, demos, pricing negotiation, and renewal — mostly for clients in the ₹5-50 Cr revenue range. Open to enterprise sales or BD roles with a base + commission structure. Message me directly, I reply within a day."
Final-year B.Tech student / fresher
Before: "Final year engineering student looking for opportunities to apply my knowledge and grow professionally."
After: "I'm a final-year Computer Science student at NIT Trichy, and I've spent the last year building things people actually use — not just coursework. Built a campus food-ordering app used by 800+ students across two hostels, and interned at [Company] where I automated a manual reporting process that saved the ops team roughly 6 hours a week. Comfortable with React, Node.js, and MongoDB. Graduating in June 2025 and looking for full-time SDE roles — open to relocating anywhere in India."
Quick checklist before you publish
- Read only the first two lines out loud — would a stranger keep reading?
- Count your numbers: at least one hard figure (₹, %, time saved, team size) in the first half.
- Cut every adjective describing yourself (dynamic, passionate, driven) — replace with a fact.
- Check that your target keywords (tools, industry, job title) appear at least once in plain text.
- End with a clear next step: what role you want, or how to contact you.
- Keep total length under 2,000 characters — long enough to prove your case, short enough to actually get read.
